Hi; my name is Nakeyia. I am thirty-two years of age…for fifteen and a half years I was incarcerated. The crime that I committed was one of the biggest mistakes I’ve made in my life. I was sixteen years of age at the time of my transgression. I must admit that although I regret the decision I made that landed me there in the first place, I don’t think that I would have come this far in my life to where I am today without it. Throughout my incarceration I have lost a lot – my grandmother, mother, and brother – people that were prominent in my life. But I have also gained a lot – a GED, some college, and a lot of certifications. Most of all, I gained my freedom back! My Lord and Savior and Alternative Directions is the reason I am able to be back in society, to show the world that I am and will be a productive citizen with the second chance they have given me. My transition into society hasn’t been easy, but with the support system that I have and my faith in God, with patience I will succeed and overcome all that is thrown in my way.
