Hello my name is Pearl Porter, I was born in Washington D.C. I am a 39 year old single mother of four children, who was drinking alcohol at the age of 5 yrs old, as a result of being a part of a very abusive household and family. I was arrested in 2007 and served a 5 year sentence for assault in the 1st degree. I was paroled to the TAP program in December 2009, which was the best thing that ever happened to me. The TAP program and the civil legal department at Alternative Directions helped me with court hearings pertaining to custody of my children. I couldn’t have done it without the help of my counselors Ms. Rachel and Ms. Michelle, and my parole agent Ms. Colston. They walked me through step by step, going with me to court and child protective services. It meant so much to me.
Now I have visitation with my children, and I couldn’t began to put in words how good this makes me feel. I’ve even reconnected with my oldest child who I used to have an estranged relationship with. My recovery process was one step at a time, and with the support from A.D.I. my time was flying. In 6 month’s time, I completed the 28 day inpatient treatment substance abuse program at the Tuerke house and received group and individual counseling. After I completed that program, I continued to go individual and group sessions for outpatient treatment at the Baltimore Community Resource Center. My recovery is still an ongoing process. While I resided at the Marian Transitional House, I continued to go to groups such as parenting sessions, life skills, self esteem, anger management, women’s rap, therapy with Sister Beth, job readiness, addiction class, and NA/AA meetings on daily basis.
I’m currently still attending GED classes. I graduated from the TAP program in December 2010. I am now working at a restaurant in Timonium. I have my own place I call home at the Marian House (II) independent housing facility. I thank ADI and the TAP program and my counselors Ms. Rachel and Ms. Michelle for showing me the love I needed to live and how to make it through some of those challenging times in my life. I am truly grateful. I would recommend this program to anyone who wants a second chance in their life. It worked for me.
